Law enforcement training is at a critical juncture. Almost a daily an officer makes a mistake, and it usually ends up being headline news. Almost all of these mistakes are related to the officer’s training, or lack thereof. I cringe whenever I watch a video of an officer doing something wrong, especially because I know that an incident could have been prevented if only the officer had been properly trained. That is the primary reason for writing this book. This book aims to assist officers to perform better. It all started when I was giving a presentation to a group of individuals about the Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation (FLETA) Standards. At the end of the presentation, I asked if there were any questions or comments. One lady basically stated the standards are a “how to” manage an academy or develop a law enforcement training program. I thought to myself, “Well that’s true.” Being a FLETA assessor has given me the opportunity to see how various law enforcement academies and programs conduct their business, both good and bad. What an opportunity!
