This volume reflects the contributions and advice of many colleagues and friends who share our interest in understanding the role of international law in international relations. We have been fortunate to work with an extraordinary group of scholars, and to have enjoyed significant support from the university at which we work. We were extremely fortunate to receive a major grant to support interdisciplinary research from theTempleUniversity Office of the Provost. This support enabled us to host two workshops at TempleUniversity in spring 2011. These workshops afforded an opportunity for authors to present their papers and receive sustained feedback from one another, as well as from an outstanding group of expert commentators, including Paul Berman, Harlan Cohen, John Crook, Lori Damrosch, Meg deGuzman, Andrew Guzman, Oona Hathaway, Duncan Hollis, Ian Hurd, Leslie Johns, Claire Kelly, Robert Keohane, Peter Lindseth, RalfMichaels, JideNzelibe, Tonya Putnam, Jaya Ramji-Nogales, Cesare Romano, Beth Simmons, and Pierre-Hugues Verdier. We thank each of these individuals for their thoughtful comments and many constructive suggestions. We are also grateful to Temple Law School, and particularly to Dean JoAnne Epps, for supporting this project. We also wish to thank Debbie Feldman, Dorothy Lee, Dimitri Ferrell, and Joel Houkom for their efforts in ensuring the success of the workshops. We also thank Temple law students Alex Varghese and Keith Greenwald and Temple political science students Gorana Draguljic and Danielle Scherer for their useful research, and EricaMaier, Joel Houkom and Shannon Crocker for their assistance with the preparation of the volume.
